The GATSBY Dance Competition, produced by the Mandom Corporation, is currently one of the biggest competitions that searches for the best student dancer in Asia. Participating countries include Hong Kong, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, Japan, and just this year, Philippines. The winner in the qualifying event in each country moves on to the finals in Tokyo, Japan.
Last November 2012, the Philippine dance community had its first taste of the said event with the GATSBY Styling Dance Competition, Philippine Inter-Collegiate Dance Battle held at the Market! Market! Activity Center, in Bonifacio Global City. Though the said competition was not yet meant to send its winner to the Asia Finals, it definitey became a huge success and ignited the Philippines to finally become a contender for the Asian finals.
Thus, it will be the second time that the dance competition will be held in the Philippines but only the first time for the country to be represented in the Asia Finals.
Unlike in the other Asian countries participating in this competition, the Philippine finals however have two (2) categories. First category is the Open College Division, which follows the same format being used in the other countries. This category is open to any College students with a minimum of one (1) to a maximum of three (3) members. The winner of this category will take home the Philippine Champion title and will be the country's representative to the Asian Finals in Tokyo, Japan and will receive a cash prize.
The second category - College Crew Division, on the other hand was made to adapt to the standard culture of dance competitions being held in the country. This category is open to college students belonging to one (1) school only with a minimum of four (4) to a maximum of 16 members. The winning crew for this category will take home the College Crew Division Championship title as well as a cash prize.
